Calculate gross regular pay, overtime pay and total weekly earnings. Enter the hours you are treating as regular and overtime, then select time and a half or double time.
How overtime pay is calculated
Overtime pay = hourly rate × overtime multiplier × overtime hours. Regular pay = hourly rate × regular hours. The calculator adds both amounts. At $25 an hour, 40 regular hours and five overtime hours at 1.5×, regular pay is $1,000, overtime pay is $187.50 and total weekly gross pay is $1,187.50.
Which hours qualify?
This tool does not decide your legal entitlement. Federal FLSA overtime generally concerns covered, nonexempt employees working more than 40 hours in a workweek. State rules, exemptions, multiple pay rates and compensation included in the regular rate can change the calculation. Enter the correct regular rate and qualifying overtime hours for your situation.
See the US Department of Labor overtime guidance for eligibility and regular-rate rules.
Time and a half versus double time
Time and a half multiplies the regular hourly rate by 1.5; double time uses 2.0. A $20 rate becomes $30 or $40 for each qualifying overtime hour. Selecting double time here does not mean your employer is legally required to pay it.
Are overtime wages tax-free?
This calculator shows gross pay only. It does not calculate the qualified-overtime income-tax deduction or assume all overtime is tax-free. IRS Publication 15 explains that overtime remains subject to Social Security, Medicare and federal income-tax withholding. A qualifying deduction on a tax return is different from the amount withheld on a paycheck.
